Introduced at the end of 2024, the Fujifilm X-M5 will not be the most capable camera on the market in terms of photography and video, but it is a very interesting option because of all the potential it can offer to content creators of all types, to those looking for a camera to document their lives, and even as a B-camera. Below I will tell you everything you need to know and my experience with this camera that will surprise you.

Compact and lightweight design
If anything sets Fujifilm cameras apart is their design. That combination of retro style and the demands of today's users results in very eye-catching designs. One of the clearest examples is the X100 series, where models like the Fujifilm X100V and the more recent Fujifilm X100VI have become true objects of desire.
This little Fujifilm X-M5 has not achieved the same level of popularity, but that is also due to a lack of awareness of everything it can offer in terms of both photography and video. Otherwise, it is an attractive option where its compact design and lightness are the two most outstanding features. Although to achieve this, you have to accept some shortcomings.
As you can see in the top photo, the X-M5 is a small camera with dimensions of only 111.9mm x 66.6mm x 38mm and an approximate weight of 355g. This makes it very convenient to always carry it with you. And that is with this Fujinon 15-45mm F3.5/5.6 lens; if you opt for some of the pancake and prime lenses, it will be even easier to carry it with you wherever you go, even beating the X100VI.
Otherwise, the top is where the different dials are located for controlling the main settings. You have a film selection dial with several positions that can be customized as you wish with, for example, analog film emulation recipes that you can find through the FujiXWeekly app or create your own recipes for Fuji with ChatGPT.
Then there are the main dials for mode selection and those that allow you to change the settings you have established. It is important to note here that unlike other brands, the front dial is also a button with which you can alternate between adjusting different parameters. This will depend on what you configure, but you will be able to vary the aperture, ISO, FILM, etc. Very useful.
Leaving aside size and weight, another of the great successes of the Fujifilm X-M5 is the articulated screen. This is not only useful for photography, but also for video. What's more, it is especially when we use it as a video camera that we will be most glad to have a screen that we can rotate and turn to see and frame ourselves.
The screen is also touchscreen, and I liked both the responsiveness and the image quality. At certain times, a little more brightness would have been great to see better outdoors, but it would not be fair to criticize something that much more expensive models also lack.
Now, how do you achieve such a compact size and weight? Well, by making one sacrifice or two. The first: it does not have an electronic viewfinder. Here it really depends on how you use the cameras, and if you are used to shooting through the viewfinder, you will miss it. Especially in situations where the screen is not completely perfect.
The second sacrifice is the battery used. Models like the Fujifilm X-S20, with which it shares certain technical features, have the new battery that, with a larger size, also offers a higher number of shots and recording time. Solution? Get at least two NP-W126S batteries if you are one of those who go out to take photos and record video all day.
The Fujifilm X-M5 features a USB-C connection, micro HDMI, and 3.5mm audio input and output.
Likewise, this last “but” is also solved in a simple way by taking advantage of the USB-C charging option. So with a power bank you can increase the usage time, although you will have to have a cable hanging if you want to keep using it.
Image quality in photo and video
Let's talk about technical specifications, those that provide the necessary information to give us an idea of what we can achieve in terms of results. Here the Fujifilm X-M5 stands out mainly for:
-
APS-C X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor with X-Trans 5 image processor
-
Fujifilm X mount
-
Sensor resolution of 26.1MP
-
ISO range 160-12800 (expandable to 80-51200)
-
AF system with face, eye, and object detection
-
3″ tilt touchscreen
-
WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
-
Maximum video resolution of 6.2K in a 3:2 aspect ratio
-
Slow motion up to 240p at 1080p
-
Film emulation support and logarithmic recording compatible with F-Log and F-Log2
-
HDMI video output with support for RAW video
Price from €999 camera plus lens.
As you can see in the table above, the capabilities of this X-M5 are surprising. And it is that together with Fujifilm's color science, the use of recipes to emulate the results we would get with analog films and a customizable AF system, its video capabilities are worth stopping to consider and keeping very much in mind if you are dedicated to creating content on social media.
Here where you see it, the Fujifilm X-M5 is capable of recording at a maximum resolution of 6.2K at a 3:2 aspect ratio. That is, using the entire surface of the sensor and reaching a number of pixels vertically and horizontally that then allow you to reframe the image however you want depending on the platform where you are going to publish (Instagram and TikTok vertically, horizontal for long YouTube videos, or any other aspect ratio that you want to explore creatively).
This, together with a good AF system and how compact it is, makes it a great ally for any content creator. In addition, the three built-in microphones offer the possibility of configuring different scenarios where only the sound coming from behind the camera is captured, from the front, from both, or all the sound around it. And all these options are very easy to adjust from the VLOG option. So much so that even the background blur effect is very easy to achieve if you do not have much knowledge of video. Or activate the practical and useful product demonstration mode with which the focus point changes faster when you show something in front of you to the camera.

Who is the Fujifilm X-M5 for?
This is the question we really ask ourselves with every camera we test. This Fujifilm X-M5 is not the camera that a professional or demanding user should buy if it is going to be their only camera. However, it is the camera I would recommend to anyone who is going to create content on social media and is looking for something of quality, easy to use, and with a lot of potential.
Of course, I also have to make a note since it seems to me an ideal camera for any type of profile looking for a camera to document their daily life, record those BTS (behind the scenes) or use it as a B-camera because of its image quality.
If you are a Fuji user, it can be the ideal complement to your current camera. And if you are not, it is a proposal that at least deserves to be known. That way, in the future, you can assess whether you are interested in getting one or not.
